Durant la guerre de 1971 entre le Pakistan occidental et le Pakistan oriental (qui deviendra le Bangladesh), dans un village isolé sur les rives de la Modhumati, Motaleb Mollah, riche propriétaire terrien et chef local, collabore avec l'armée pakistanaise qui se livre à des pillages. A la mort de son frère aîné, Motaleb épouse sa belle-soeur qui avait eu un fils, Bachchu, de son frère. Amulya Chakrabarty, professeur idéaliste et brahmane du village, a de l'influence sur le jeune Bachchu. L'enseignant a une fille, Shanti, devenue veuve.

During the 1971 war between West Pakistan and East Pakistan (which will become Bangladesh), in a remote village by the river Modhumati, Motaleb Mollah, a rich landlord and local leader, cooperates with the marauding Pakistani army. After his elder brother's death, Motaleb marries his sister-in-law who had a son, Bachchu, from his brother. Amulya Chakrabarty, an idealist Brahmin teacher in the village, has some influence over young Bachchu. The teacher also has a widowed daughter, Shanti.
When the war breaks out, Bachchu watches a genocide perpetrated by the Pakistani soldiers. He decides to join the Bengalee guerillas fighting the Pakistani army. The experiences of a bitter war shatter Bachchu's world of innocence.
