Agé de dix-sept ans et passionné de poésie, Nham vit dans la campagne vietnamienne. Il vit avec sa mère et Ngu, sa belle-soeur, et assume le rôle de chef de famille. Son père est mort et son frère vit loin du village. En âge de faire son service militaire, il devra lui aussi bientôt partir. Se sentant seule en l'absence de son mari, Ngu s'est peu à peu attachée à Nham. Un jour, Nham rencontre une femme belle et raffinée et passe une nuit blanche à penser à elle.
Seventeen-year-old Nham, a lover of poetry, lives in the Vietnamese countryside. Living with his mother and young sister-in-law Ngu, he is the head of the family. His father died and his brother lives far from the village. He too will leave as he will soon be drafted. Feeling lonely as her husband is away, Ngu has become attached to Nham. One day, Nham meets a beautiful and sophisticated woman and spends a sleepless night thinking of her.
